The Church Times is looking for a new editor to succeed Paul Handley, who is retiring at the end of September 2024.


Candidates should have:

  • Sound, demonstrable journalistic experience at a senior level, both of print and online material
  • Knowledge of legal matters appertaining to journalism and publishing
  • A high standard of literacy
  • A good eye for design, images, and layouts
  • Ability to work fast and accurately to tight deadlines
  • Secure knowledge of Anglican affairs, titles, and terminology, and of church and theological matters more generally
  • A bold appreciation of the paper’s independence
  • Commitment to the CT’s mission to represent fairly all shades of theological opinion
  • Confidence to make sound editorial judgements, in consultation with colleagues
  • Experience of managing a team of staff and freelances in several locations, together with the ability to work collegially with counterparts in all departments of the Hymns Ancient and Modern group
  • An entrepreneurial approach to the challenges currently facing the media, and a willingness to seek out and embrace innovations in publishing
  • Respect for the CT as the C of E’s paper of record
  • The qualities of a creative, strategic thinker who can contribute to the overall group as well as the CT
  • Ability to manage a significant budget


The post is based in the Golden Lane offices in London and is full-time.

Salary will depend on experience.
