Shiplake College is an independent boarding and day school for boys aged 11 to 18 and girls aged 16 to 18. Situated in 45 acres of beautiful Oxfordshire countryside near Henley-on-Thames, we offer an outstanding education based on small class sizes, excellent facilities and dedicated teaching staff. The College is not just a place to learn, but a place to live. Our mixture of boarders and day pupils form a vibrant and busy community, where every day brings fresh challenges and new opportunities.
The environment we provide is perfect for those who are able or have the desire to make the most of these opportunities. We are proud of what our pupils achieve, and so are they.
We have a superb opportunity for an ordained Church of England priest to become our part-time Chaplain and lead the spiritual life of the College. The successful candidate will work closely with the Sixth form team of Chapel Wardens and the Director of Music who provide support at College services. He or she will be expected to liaise closely with the Rector of the benefice.
As Chaplain you will be actively involved in all aspects of College life, leading services, organising open drop in sessions and visiting each of the houses during break times. Our current “Rev”, as he is affectionately known, not only provides practical and spiritual support to the whole community, including staff and pupils’ parents, but also continually inspires us to think beyond the boundaries of school life. Harvest festival involves collecting practical items such as socks for the Churches in Reading Drop in Centre; at Easter we collect Easter eggs to take to a school where there are a high number of refugees. Pupils help deliver the items and see first-hand how small acts of kindness make a positive impact on the lives of others.
Applicants must be approachable, supportive and empathetic to the whole community; creative in approach to church services and able to source inspirational guest speakers for whole school assemblies. Experience of working with teenagers would be an advantage. The successful candidate will have the ability to inspire, challenge, support and engage all members of the community.
Subsidised accommodation may be available on site.
