The Methodist Church is seeking a second part-time archivist to help appraise an archive of largely, but not exclusively, twentieth-century missionary records and other items. This Project Archivist will need to appraise the records and remove material inappropriate for deposit, and prepare for relocation of those records and other items appropriate for permanent preservation and suitable for research purposes. The
archive will mostly be deposited with the SOAS Library, University of London (or occasionally another Methodist archive or museum collection).
The Project Archivist will help to recruit and supervise a small group of volunteers to allow this work to progress in a timely manner. We hope there will be occasional opportunities to promote the collection of historic Methodist missionary manuscripts, images and printed books held at the SOAS Library using interesting items from this work on the archive.
Applicants should have a postgraduate archive qualification. Recent graduates are welcome to apply. Some relevant archive experience, preferably in the context of religious archives, will be required. A passion for archives and their value, and excellent communication and team-working skills are essential. Knowledge of missionary and or Methodist history would be an advantage.
The number of hours per day and on which weekdays they are worked by the Project Archivist is negotiable. This work will be based in the Methodist Church offices in London, but there may be occasional need to visit the records stored offsite and out of London, for which expenses will be paid. The Methodist Church is committed to making its archives accessible, as part of its mission and outreach, and you will need to be sympathetic to the ethos of the Methodist Church.
