Job Description

The National Stewardship and Resources Officer provides national leadership for promoting Stewardship across the Church of England, with responsibilities that include formulating and agreeing policy and strategy, and developing and delivering effective programmes and resources to parishes and dioceses.

Main Responsibilities

Policy/Strategy Development

  • Identify, document, and promote the implementation of, policy and practice that enables real-terms growth in income. In particular, support dioceses as they consider strategic options and models for their approach to stewardship.

Initiative Development

  • Develop, agree & promote adoption of national initiatives that improve the effectiveness of diocesan and parish stewardship practice.
  • Lead Diocesan stewardship colleagues and external experts in developing, documenting and resourcing good practice - enabling parishes and dioceses to reapply proven success.

Government / Regulator Interface

  • Seek to influence Government and key regulators (Charity Commission and HMRC) in the areas of giving, Gift Aid and other parish related finance issues, so that in as far as is possible, legislation and policy support the Church's work in this area.

Teaching and Training

  • Develop the capability of clergy to preach effectively on generosity, money and stewardship within the context of discipleship by delivering training events. Train parish officers in effective stewardship theology and practice.
  • Respond to invitations to speak on stewardship within a wide variety of situations. It is desirable, but not essential, for the post-holder to be able to preach at larger church and cathedral services.

Network Management

  • Lead network of Diocesan Stewardship Advisers, Diocesan Chief Execs/ Secretaries in developing and implementing good practice for giving and fundraising. This will include advising on role, priorities and appointment of Diocesan Advisers.
  • Provide Continuing Professional Development opportunities for Diocesan Advisers to ensure skills and capabilities of the network are increasing. Provide CME training for clergy.
  • Serve as Secretary to the National Stewardship Committee, with its wider brief for resources and fundraising. Exercise an executive role in representing the committee and implementing its policies.

Procurement

  • Lead the marketing of Parish Buying services across the wider church as a key opportunity to ensure good stewardship of resources.

The ideal candidate

Experience

Experience of leadership at a senior level with experience of leading and managing strategic change. Experience should incorporate many of the following:

  • Leading and managing change
  • Communications, marketing or PR
  • Development and implementation of strategy across complex organisations.
  • Significant fundraising responsibility

Competencies

  • Highly effective written and oral communication, especially in presenting to large groups.
  • Very strong leadership and influencing skills

Qualifications

Professional Qualification: Membership of Institute of Fundraising, CIM (Marketing), CIPR (Public Relations), or similar desirable although not essential.

 

Circumstances

  • We would welcome applicants from any Christian background. This post carries an occupational requirement for the job holder to be a practicing Christian (in accordance with the Equality Act 2010). An active faith together with a personal commitment to the principles of Christian Stewardship are essential for the effective performance of key aspects of the role, along with establishing credibility with stakeholders.
  • The role will require considerable travel throughout England and may require work during evenings and on Saturdays and Sundays.
