Job Description

The Archbishop of Canterbury as Patron & The Bishop of London

wish to appoint an Incumbent for

ALL HALLOWS BY THE TOWER (City of London)

with attached responsibility of

AREA DEAN FOR THE CITY

The churches of the City of London are of national importance – situated in the leading financial district of the world they minister to those whose decisions affect jobs and lives far beyond the ‘Square Mile’. The last ten years have shown exciting growth in City churches with increasing diversity in the types of ministry offered and vibrant worship in every tradition.

All Hallows by the Tower, situated in the east of the City, is well placed for the next stage of its development. The new incumbent will play a leading part in church and secular life in the City and will help the parish to discern new ways of working not only within the parish but beyond in the deanery and, given All Hallows’ wide links, internationally.

We are seeking and praying for a priest who is confident working across church traditions who will be:

  • a person of vision, possessing the charisma to lead, encourage and inspire both within the church and among the wider community; a team player able to work with others to fulfil the parish’s best potential
  • a leader of the Christian community in the City of London
  • a major influence for good in the City’s life and work
  • a skilled communicator, articulate and able to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds from senior professionals to rough sleepers; able to use 21st century communication technology
  • a person of deep and self-evident spirituality and faith; an effective sharer of the ‘good news’
  • a pastoral priest; a good listener who is genuinely interested in caring for the congregation and our visitors with warmth and empathy

and who will:

  • maintain the inclusive welcome and hospitality already existing in the parish
  • inspire people to grow in faith and to deepen their spirituality, both within and outside of regular services; continue to develop varied liturgy
  • grow the weekday and Sunday congregations, reaching out to those who live or work nearby
  • be aware of the demands of the administration, maintenance and care of a grade 1 listed building and its artefacts, and be flexible enough to cope with seven-days-a-week ministry

The Vicarage, spread over four floors, is provided by the Wakefield Trust and is not owned or administered by the Diocese of London

Parish Profile and application form from:

The Bishop of London’s PA, Janet Laws

Closing date for applications: Tuesday 30th October 2018 (12 noon)

Enhanced DBS clearance will be required

We welcome applications from all. However, we are aware that women and those from ethnic minority groups are currently under-represented among our clergy and so we particularly encourage applications from these groups. Appointment will, of course, be based on merit alone.
