House for Duty Associate Minister

The Leith Hill Benefice

London and Home Counties

Ref: JN006446

Job Description

St John’s Wotton and St Mary’s Holmbury are member churches of the Leith Hill United Benefice, together with St James’ Abinger and Christ Church, Coldharbour.

The parsonage (a four bedroom house) is situated in the village of Holmbury St Mary and the person appointed will initially work mainly, but not exclusively, in the parishes of St Mary and St John.

Wotton and Holmbury St Mary are rural communities of around 300 and 600 souls respectively, located in the beautiful Surrey Hills close to Dorking and Guildford. St John’s, a lovely Saxon church, stands on the Pilgrim’s Way, close to the North Downs and St Mary’s is the gracious Victorian centrepiece in the village that takes its name.

Both churches have a distinctive place in the hearts of the communities they serve and are proudly and affectionately supported by those communities. Holmbury has a garage, a preparatory school, a private sixth-form college and two pubs; Wotton has a pub and a well-established hotel/conference centre and both have village halls that support a wide range of community activities. Children from the villages attend primary schools in local villages and generally move onto secondary schools in either Dorking or Guildford.

The appointment is for an initial 3 years.

We are looking for someone who, alongside the Rector, will:

  • provide leadership to empower the church communities in their spiritual growth and mission
  • develop a collaborative approach within the Leith Hill Benefice
  • have an inspirational and flexible approach to worship,
developing styles that are fit for the 21st century
  • help us to continue to make church involvement an attractive option for young families and all parishioners young and old
  • be a good communicator, approachable and welcoming
  • will be committed to embracing the Diocesan Vision
Transforming Church, transforming Lives - and helping the Benefice to do the same
