St John’s College, University of Cambridge

 

St John’s College was founded in 1511 by Lady Margaret Beaufort, the mother of King Henry VII. It is one of the largest colleges in the University of Cambridge with some 160 Fellows, 530 undergraduates in residence and approximately 320 graduate students. St John’s is looking to appoint a Dean of Chapel to succeed the current Dean who is leaving to take on a new role as the Chief Executive Officer of a charity having worked at the College for nearly 20 years.

 

The role

 

This is a very senior and high profile role within the College and is responsible to the College Council for overseeing and managing the provision of services and the conduct of divine worship in the College Chapel, the activities of the choirs and Chapel music generally, and the pastoral care provided by the Chapel to resident members and staff of the College community, regardless of their religious beliefs.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to make a major contribution to the strategic direction and leadership of this important area of the life of the College.

 

The position also offers the opportunity to pursue scholarly research within the successful candidate’s specialist field, if desired, and to teach, though neither are essential requirements of the role.

 

The candidate

 

The person appointed will be an ordained priest of the Church of England or of a Church in full communion with the Church of England, who has: excellent leadership skills with a collaborative and collegial approach to work; a strong pastoral sense, with the ability to build rapport with younger people and to engage with students; the ability to think strategically; strong communication skills; and a commitment to, and affinity with, the research and teaching ethos of a Cambridge college.

 

The salary for the role is expected to be in the region of £50k - £60k p.a. Additional remuneration will, if applicable, be paid for taking on additional roles such as a Director of Studies, teaching or Tutor role. The successful candidate will also be provided with the usual benefits of a Fellowship in the College.
