College Chaplain (1-year interim appointment)

Contract: 1-year fixed-term, 18.75 hours per week (0.5 FTE)

St Hugh’s College seeks appoint an interim Chaplain for a period of one year from 1 September 2022, while our permanent Chaplain is on leave. The post is offered on a one-year fixed-term basis, 50% FTE (18.75 hours per week), with a salary of £20,428 per annum.

St Hugh’s is a large, inclusive college with roughly equal numbers of undergraduate and graduate students, set in beautiful grounds to the north of the city centre. The College was founded in 1886 in the Anglican tradition, and was named after the 12th-century Bishop of Lincoln, St Hugh of Avalon. Since its founding, St Hugh’s has sought to admit students from backgrounds which have traditionally been under-represented in the University. The college is known for its friendly, welcoming, and informal atmosphere.

The Chaplain is responsible for the religious life of the college. In addition to arranging weekly services during full term, the Chaplain oversees the college’s provision for students of other faiths, including the recently-refurbished multifaith prayer room. Services in the College Chapel are conducted according to the principles of the Church of England but are ecumenical in nature.

The Chaplain also plays a significant pastoral role and is a key member of the college’s welfare team, providing support for students of all faiths and none.

The successful candidate will have a strong track record in providing ministerial and spiritual guidance to a wide range of people; will be able to provide pastoral support across the college community; and will be committed to the purpose, values and ethos of a progressive self-governing college in the 21st century.
