Dean’s Office & Chaplaincy
From £32,676 (Grade 5),
including London Weighting Allowance
Primarily St Thomas’ and Waterloo, also other campuses as required
This is a new post, bringing together the roles of Chaplain to the Waterloo Campus and Chaplain to the St Thomas’ Campus, and also the position of Vice-Dean.
The Dean of King’s College London is responsible for overseeing the spiritual welfare and development of all students and staff. The Dean’s Office is the first point of contact for any queries about religious provision at King’s, and is made up of the Office of the Dean, the Chaplaincy, the Chapel Choir, and the Associate of King’s College (AKC) programme.
The Chaplaincy plays an important part in the field of student welfare, in collaboration with other appropriate departments and teams, and is also a resource for the College community as a whole. The Chaplain to the St Thomas’ and Waterloo Campuses will have considerable freedom to create and exercise a ministry in response to the needs of the whole College community on these campuses, as part of a strong team of Chaplains from many different faith traditions.
The King’s estate at the St Thomas’ campus is embedded within St Thomas’ Hospital, although the Chaplain serves the King’s staff and students rather than the hospital community. The main focus on this campus is continuing Medical and Dental teaching. The Waterloo campus houses the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care, as well as departments within the Faculties of Life Sciences & Medicine, Social Science & Public Policy, and Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences.
In this aspect of the role, the Chaplain is responsible to the College Chaplain, who heads up the Chaplaincy team. The Chaplain will work with the wider team in the supervision of two Chaplaincy Assistants.
The role of Vice-Dean is to support the Dean, who is responsible for the spiritual life of King’s as a whole and is part of the Senior Management Team. In this aspect of the role, the Vice-Dean is responsible to the Dean, and also works closely with the Dean’s Office Business Manager.
As a member of the Dean’s Office, the Chaplain/Vice-Dean has a responsibility to encourage and develop the corporate aims of the College. This includes supporting and promoting the AKC on all campuses.
The Chaplain will be employed by King’s College London, and will be a priest of the Diocese of Southwark, under the authority of a licence from the Diocesan Bishop under the 1967 Extra-Parochial Measure; there is a Genuine Occupational Requirement (GOR) for the Chaplain to be a priest of the Church of England, or a Church in communion with it, who is eligible to be so licensed by the Bishop. The appointment is also subject to receipt of satisfactory DBS checks. A housing allowance is available.
This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.
This is a full-time post, comprising 0.8FTE Chaplain and 0.2FTE Vice-Dean
