Appointment of a Director of Music and Organ Scholar

Douai Abbey

Location:

South East

Ref: JN013137

The Abbot and Community of Douai Abbey seek to make two appointments upon the retirement of Dr John Rowntree after 34 years of distinguished service as the Abbey’s Director of Music and as director of the Douai Abbey Singers. The Abbey Church, which has a fine three-manual Tickell organ and a generous acoustic for singers, regularly hosts concerts of sacred music around its Benedictine liturgical life.

Director of Music

The appointee must have a passionate and wide interest in liturgical music, proven competence and experience in liturgical settings, and a sympathy for the Benedictine tradition of worship. Close to London, Oxford and Reading, Douai Abbey would encourage the appointee to foster its musical profile more widely, both in the local community and nationally. While a degree of flexibility will be necessary, the core work will be focused initially on the celebration of conventual Mass on Sundays and solemnities. The Director of Music will report to the Abbot. The appointment will be for five years, renewable by mutual agreement. Appropriate remuneration will be discussed at interview and confirmed on the appointment of the successful candidate.

Organ Scholar

The Organ Scholar will not only assist the Director of Music, but will also be actively involved in the wider musical and liturgical life of the Abbey Church. The post is ideal for younger organists of Oxbridge or cathedral standard. Suitable remuneration will be offered.

Applications for both posts, including a full CV and the names and contact details of three referees, and which are subject to regulatory checks, close on 31 December 2024.

They should be sent by email to appointments@douaiabbey.org.uk

Closing date: 31 December 2024
